The killing method is based on how to damage the fur as little as possible, regardless of the level of suffering of the animal.
Mink is a semi-aquatic animal adapted to holding its breath. Therefore, it suffers from long suffocation in the gas chamber. Secret footage from a Polish farm has even recorded minks surviving this procedure. Afterwards, they were beaten with a metal bar.
Foxes and raccoon dogs are generally electrocuted at 110 volts for at least three seconds. The electrodes are applied to their mouths and inserted into their anuses.
The same procedure is used for chinchillas: the electrodes are attached to their ears and genitals. If they don't die after being electrocuted, some farmers break their necks manually.
American mink, foxes, raccoon dogs and chinchillas are the most commonly bred/raised animals for fur in the European Union: (34.7 million mink, 2.7 million foxes, 166,000 raccoon dogs and 227,000 chinchillas in 2018).
Animals suffer all their lives in small cages with no solid floor. Their paws get caught in wire meshes and this unsuitable surface causes them both pain and discomfort. They live a life of stress, numerous injuries with little or no veterinary care.
Amendment of the Act No. 246 of 1992 on the Protection of Animals against Cruelty, adopted in 2017, terminated the activity of all fur farms in Czech Republic as of 31 January 2019.
Unfortunately, animals on fur farms are still suffering in many EU countries. In addition, in the Czech Republic, fur can still be traded from fur farms of such countries, as well as from farms outside the EU. Therefore, it is still supporting this cruel anachronism.
"The European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) is an unique way for Europeans to play an active role in shaping the EU legislation. It is a mechanism for European citizens to call on the European Commission to propose new legislation on a specific issue. Unlike petition, the European citizens' initiative turns directly to the European Commission and can therefore lead to changes in the EU legislation. For the Commission to consider an initiative, it must get the support of at least 1 million verified signatures from EU citizens. EOI calls on the European Commission to put an end to fur farms in the EU as well as the sale of fur products. You can read more about the EOI on the European Commission's website here.
Fur farming is inherently cruel and it is widely rejected by EU citizens.
It is impossible to improve the welfare of animals on fur farms. Whilst no animals should live in a caged environment, the keeping of inherently wild species in cages can only be defined as abject cruelty.
The keeping and killing of animals solely for the purpose of fur production is ethically unacceptable.
Numerous outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 on mink farms have evidenced the veterinary-public health risks associated with the production of fur.
The existence of production bans in some Member States has a distorting impact on the market for the supply of farmed fur products. This favours traders in those Member States where there is no production ban, to the detriment of those EU countries where outright bans are already in place.
The placing of fur products on the internal markets of several territories and jurisdictions has already been prohibited. This includes dog and cat fur within the EU.
Echoing the calls from many Member States we, EU citizens, invite the Commission to prohibit by law, throughout the Union, the:
keeping and killing of animals for the sole or main purpose of fur production.
placement of farmed animal fur, and products containing such fur, on the EU market.
We will keep you updated on the campaign's progress, current status and other opportunities how to get involved. We will then inform you about other issues concerning animals and opportunities for your involvement.
Who else but you can really stand up for animals in our country and around the world?
